Hello everyone, my name is Hanhee and I am a senior boarder from Seoul, Korea at Emma Willard School. From a young age, I have been interested in children and education in general as my mom was an early childhood educator and I have two younger siblings. This naturally led me to think about what challenges or stress children were facing due to COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Children had to face educational challenges such as having online classes, social challenges such as not being able to make friends and socialize, and emotional challenges such as going through mental health issues due to staying at home all the time. Through my siblings, I personally was able to see what the actual struggles due to COVID were. For example, at the beginning of the pandemic, my sister had a hard time keeping to her school schedule while physically staying home and learning how to use technology to attend school. I also noticed that she was facing social struggles, as she did not really know her classmates’ faces without masks and did not have enough time to get to know them and make friends. As I was observing her problems, I became curious about what other challenges other children were facing and the ways parents or teachers can support them in moving toward normalcy. Through this project, I hope to learn more about the children's daily struggles due to COVID that will continue to exist and prepare a support system for the children and their parents/teachers. After talking to parents, teachers, and also children if possible, about their social and emotional success and struggle during the pandemic, my goal is to come up with a guidance to support them in their struggles. Throughout the year, I will make blog posts on this website for parents/teachers to learn about the impact on children (that they did not know of) and provide some tips on helping their children.
